Beginning this Saturday, February 16th, the Richard Neutra VDL Studio and Residence is open to the public for tours. Every Saturday from 11:00 AM-3:00 PM, the home will be open to mid-century modern enthusiasts for a measly $10. What a great price to tour Neutra’s personal residence and studio. I’ll see you at 2300 Silverlake Blvd, LA!

Today’s LA Times home and garden section features this lovely home in Palm Springs. Designed by William Krisel, this home is brand-new construction, based on a 50 year old design. What a novel idea! Maybe this could serve as a model for in-fill projects here in Los Angeles county? Instead of building a “Fake-o Mediterranean-Tuscan-o” blob, use some classic mid-century modern house plans and build something unique!

Just giving you the early warning for something you definitely do not want to miss: CABoom V. Yes, it is the fifth installment of the coolest design and architecture show on the planet, hosted in Barker Hangar at the Santa Monica Airport. I’ve been to the last three shows and this event gets more amazing every time. It is a great collection of independent designers and architects. There are home tours, and dj’s spinning hipster music, and awesome product displays, and lectures by key architects, the best in pre-fab homes, and too much to jam into this little blog post. I’ll see you there!

The Dingbat Tuesday feature is this 5 unit rental property located in Belmont Shores. It is listed for $1,125,000. There are two 2 bedroom (with fireplaces), one 1 bedroom, and two single units. Located in Belmont Shores just two blocks to the beach, the best feature of this apartment building is the ample parking! According to the list agent (Michael Jones, Prudential California Realty) the rents collected are $5,110 monthly. With a 35% down payment, this cute little dingbat could be a money maker. Just came across this Flickr photo set. It is a fabulous collection of house plans with all the clean lines that I love. I wonder if you could find a set of architectural plans and build one of these classics today? Seriously, if you buy a tear down house on a lot, and build from these plans, you could have a brand new Mid-Century Modern home. Making the world a little more beautiful, one lot at a time.

Anyways, check out this very cool looking Gregory Ain designed home in Mar Vista. Originally built in 1948, this home features 3 bedrooms and 1 bathroom in 1,256 square feet of living space. On a rainy and cold Sunday, the wife and I checked out this Mid-Century Modern condo yesterday. This 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom condo is about 916 square feet. It features a separate dining area, and lots of built-in storage. There is a true master suite, a bonus for a condo at this price. The kitchen and heating is all-electric, and there is no parking in the building. There is monthly parking in a private lot next door, however. The condition of the condo unit and the building is good. Originally, this was a Tiki themed building. But over the years, some of the Tiki elements have been removed and replaced. The bathrooms in this unit feature the original pink tile and fixtures, and are remarkably clean and in good condition.

Somewhere behind all this lush tropical foliage is a very original version of a 1948 Gregory Ain mid-century classic. This home is 3 bedrooms, and 1 bath in 1,210 square feet. This home has some very unique features that are not common in the Mar Vista tract, including the “flared” clerestory windows which create the unusual roofline. There is also a center “bubble” skylight of acrylic. This home has elements that make me think of a greenhouse. Also, the front yard looks like the jungle garden at Huntington Gardens. The Los Angeles Conservancy is hosting the Mainly Main tour in Downtown LA on Sunday. Head down and check out the sights. There will be tours of the newly re-opened St. Vibiana’s Cathedral, Pacific Electric lofts, National City Lofts, art galleries, the Regent Theater, and the Edison Lounge. If you go for a morning tour, you can also see me hosting part of the Vibiana tour. It really is a great event, and a wonderful way to learn about up-and-coming Downtown LA. See you there!
